Shirley A. Scullion

1943 - 2024

With love and sadness, the family of Shirley Scullion announce her passing at the Charlotte County Hospital, St. Stephen, NB on Sunday October 13th, 2024.

Shirley was the daughter of the late Jack Harding "Hardy" and Rachel (McCray) Noftell. In addition to her parents, Shirley was predeceased by her brother Paul Noftell.

Shirley was born in Upper Mills, NB but lived in Summerside, PEI and Saint John, NB before settling in St. Stephen (Milltown) NB. She worked as a telephone operator when she met Thomas Scullion. They married in 1962 when Shirley was 19, a bond that would last over 62 years.

Busy raising three children, Joanne Scullion (1964), Mary Alcorn (Scullion, 1965) and Thomas Scullion Jr. (1972), Shirley worked as a crossing guard and swimming pool supervisor before landing a job at the Border Arena in St. Stephen.  Shirley had a variety of responsibilities at the hockey arena but was best known as the" Zamboni driver"; one of very few women doing that work in Canada.

The last 20 years found Shirley’s health deteriorating due to painful fibromyalgia which forced her into a quiet life at home doting on her family.

Shirley is survived by her husband Thomas Scullion, her children; Joanne Scullion, Mary Alcorn (Kelly) and Tom Scullion Jr (Nicole), grandchildren; Jill McFarlane, Keri Risien, Stephen Dahdah, Scott Alcorn, Christine Dahdah, Nicholas Dahdah, Julia Scullion, Caroline Dahdah and Grace Scullion, great grandson;  Finnan McFarlane, brother; Donald (Donnie) Noftell and sister; Heidi Douthwright

The family will receive friends at The S.O. Mehan & Son Funeral Home Ltd., 23 Main Street, St Stephen, N.B. on Thursday, October 17, 2024 from 2 – 4 pm, where remembrances will be shared. There will be no funeral service held.

Donations can be made in Shirley’s memory to Charlotte County S.P.C.A., Upper Mills United Church, Upper Mills Cemetery or a charity of one’s choice. Condolences to the family may be made online at mehanfuneralhome.ca
