It is with deep sadness that the family of Peter A. Garnett announce his passing at Saint John Regional Hospital Saint John, New Brunswick on Friday May 29, 2026.
Peter was proud to state that he was born in 1948 on Minister’s Island, St Andrews, New Brunswick, the third of four sons of the late Mike and Ruth Garnett.
His early years were spent on Minister’s Island where his father worked for the Van Horne family. He graduated from SJDA in St Andrews and then studied accounting for two years at NBCC. Upon graduating, he was hired by National Revenue Taxation in Toronto where he worked as an Auditor.
In 1972 he and Jane were married and in 1973 they moved to St. Stephen, where Peter opened an accounting office, got his realtor’s license and studied for his Certified General Accountants designation.
Peter had a long career as an accountant. He enjoyed staying in touch with all his clients and continued to serve them even as his health declined.
After the untimely death of his father-in-law, George Welock, Peter helped Jane’s mother operate Loon Bay Lodge for ten years.
Peter enjoyed athletics; soccer, hockey, golf and was a longtime member of the St Stephen Curling Club. He had a lifelong love of woods and waters. He enjoyed salmon fishing with friends on the Nepisiguit River. Peter canoed the St. Croix River, snowmobiled and 4-wheeled all over Charlotte County. Moose hunting season was his favorite time of the year.
Peter served on the board of the Border Arena. He later served on the board of Fundy Transition House for 16 years, many of them as treasurer. As well, he was treasurer of The St Croix Sportsman Club.
He and Jane had a family camp at Loon Bay which Peter lovingly enlarged, maintained and thoroughly enjoyed. It was his “happy place” where he entertained the company of birds, squirrels, weasels and groundhogs; many of which he named.
Peter will be greatly missed.
He is survived by his wife, Jane, sons; Matthew of Haines Junction, Yukon and Scott (Nichelle Dufour) of Saint John, NB, brothers; Michael (Cheryl) of Moncton, NB, David (Marguerite) and Andy (Barb) both of Bayside, sister-in-law Karen Olmstead and six nieces and nephews.
Funeral service will be held on Saturday June 13, 2026, 1 pm, at the St. Croix Church 32 Victoria Street St Stephen, New Brunswick.
The family will receive friends following the funeral service.
Donations in Peter’s memory can be made to Fundy Transition House or a charity of choice. Condolences can be made to the family online at www.mehanfuneralhome.ca
