Nellie L. Cumberland

The family of Nellie Cumberland are saddened to announce her passing at the Saint John Regional Hospital, Saint John, N.B. on Monday, March 27, 2023.

Born in St. Stephen, N.B. in 1944,  daughter of the late Jack and Dorothy Merrill.

In her early years, Nellie attended school in Lawrence Station and went on to further her education at Mrs. Brown’s Business College. She also taught kindergarten for Mrs. Tony Huntjens for thirteen years.

Nellie had a great sense of humor, and her pleasant personality was contagious to everyone she met. She also loved riding with Dale in their 1940 Olds Street Rod. She would sometimes take the Street Rod on her own and attend car shows from Bangor to Saint John when Dale was working.

A loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and sister, Nellie is survived by her husband of 59 years, Dale, her children; Cheryl Cumberland, Rod Cumberland (Dawn), and Brian Cumberland (Tricia), grandchildren; Benjamin Cumberland (Stephanie), Nathan Cumberland (Ashley), Emily Cumberland, Katelyn Cumberland, Kylie Cumberland and Keiryn Cumberland, great-grandchildren, Leo and Matthew Cumberland. She is also survived by her brother, Nate Merrill and sister, Margie Shannon (Gene), many nieces, nephews and cousins.

In addition to her parents, Nellie was predeceased by her siblings; Willis, Orlen, Jackie, Ross, Charlie, Frances, Verda, Lillian and Ella.

A private funeral service will be held and the interment will follow at Pomeroy Ridge Cemetery, Pomeroy Ridge, N.B.
