Maxine G. Hay

With gratitude for a long and generous life well lived, the family of Maxine G. Hay announce her passing at the age of 96, on August 25, 2023. Born in McAdam, New Brunswick in 1927, she was the daughter of the late Ken and Mildred Moore and sister to the late Shirley Fenwick.

Maxine was well known as a proper lady, who devoted her life to her family, home, career, and service to others. She was a proud member of the St. Croix Chapter of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Canadian Legion, as well as the Kirk McColl United Church. She volunteered her time generously with these organizations, and with the Charlotte County Hospital. She was a talented knitter and baker, famous for her Christmas shortbread cookies. She had an insatiable love of sweets (especially chocolate) and Red Rose tea.

One of the greatest joys in the final years of her life was doting on her great-grandson, Lucas, who affectionately referred to her a GG. Lucas shares the family love of the railway. Even into her 90’s, when she heard the Southern NB Railway train whistle, she would bustle everyone out the door to see it cross Hawthorne St. In her final weeks, with her granddaughter Katie by her side, the sound of the train still brought a smile to her face.

Maxine is survived by her granddaughter, Katherine "Katie" Cross (Ricky Cross) of Big Tancook Island, and her much loved nieces Veronica Fenwick of Kentville, Lisa Craig (Gordie Craig) of Lunenburg, and Vicki Fenwick of Toronto. She is predeceased by her loving husband Robert F. Hay, and her beloved son, Gary F. Hay.

A funeral service will be held at the Kirk McColl Church, 70 King Street, St. Stephen, N.B. on Friday September 22 at 2 PM, followed by an interment ceremony at the Elm Grove Cemetery in Kentville, Nova Scotia on Saturday September 23 at 2 PM.

The family is eternally grateful for the tremendous care provided first by the staff of Lonicera Hall, then Lincourt Manor, when Maxine could no longer be at home.
