Janet E. Craig

1955 - 2024

It is with profound sadness that we share the news of Janet Craig’s passing on Thursday October 3rd, 2024.

Kicking her way into the world in June 1955, Janet was roughly in the middle of Ern and Mollie Smart’s twelve children.

She always described it as a house full of rock music and vigorous debate. As a child, Janet was a tomboy and a bookworm — she was those things as a grown-up too.

Janet recently celebrated her 44th wedding anniversary with her husband and best friend, Stephen. Together they built a life filled with laughter and love. They raised three children, five miniature donkeys, and many dogs, cats, and rabbits. Becoming a grandmother was one of Janet’s greatest joys, and she was proud to be Nonny to Georgia, Alfred, and Ivy.

Animals were one of Janet’s many passions, which also included at one time or another, gardening and metal work. She was a voracious learner; friends and family always knew they could come to her with any question — if she didn’t know the answer, she’d be thrilled to figure it out!

Funny and empathetic, Janet was a charming conversationalist who spent many an hour wandering the garden or sat across the table, putting the world to rights with friends old and new. She especially loved hearing about the successes of young people she’d watched grow up.

Janet had a robust resistance to authority and always rooted for the underdog, even when no one else did. She spoke her mind and had little patience for pomp and circumstance. As such, her family knows you’ll understand that she wouldn’t have wanted an over-the-top send off.

Janet is survived by her beloved husband Steve, son; Marty, daughters; Carrie (Josh) and Marg (Leo), grandchildren; Georgia, Alfie, and Ivy, as well as her siblings and many dear friends.

A private service will be held at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, please tend your garden, feed the birds, or enjoy a great book. If you would like to make a donation in Janet’s memory, any animal rescue organisation close to your heart would be appreciated. Condolences to the family can be sent online at mehanfuneralhome.ca
