James Francis Cloney

CLONEY - Peacefully in his sleep at St. Stephen, NB, February 7, 2011, James Francis Cloney, aged 91, son of the late Michael and Florence (Mowatt) Cloney and brother of the late Charles.Jim was from a family with deep roots in southeast New Brunswick, his ancestors having immigrated from Ireland in 1832 and settling in Brockway. Born in St. Stephen in 1919, Jim lived his entire life there other than five years overseas with the Canadian Army during World War II. He was a member of the 8th Field Regiment, decorated for his service in the North African and Italian campaigns, as well as for his contribution to the efforts in northern Europe and the Netherlands where he was serving when peace was declared.Jim was a long time fisherman, hunter, badminton player, golfer and general lover of the outdoors. He contributed to the local community early in his life as a Scout leader and Little League coach. He and his wife, Mary were active members of the Catholic Church and also members of the New Brunswick Irish Society and the Royal Canadian Legion. Right up until the snow arrived this year, they enjoyed their daily outdoor walks along the footpaths outside the St. Croix Retirement Centre in town. Jim is survived by his wife Mary (Davidson) Cloney; 2 sons, Michael (and his wife Sandy), Winnipeg, MB; Brian, St. Stephen, NB; 2 daughters, Ann (and her husband Donald) MacPhail, Rothesay, NB; Brenda Haggerty, St. Stephen, NB; 10 grandchildren; 4 great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.A funeral mass will be held at Holy Rosary Catholic Church, Union Street, St. Stephen on Saturday, February 12, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. Interment will take place at Milltown Catholic Cemetery at a later date.For those who wish, donations to the Charlotte County Cancer Society or the Alzheimer Society of Canada would be appreciated by the family.
