Grace M. Cook
1937 - 2025
It is with great sadness that the family of Grace M (Weeks) Cook announce her passing at Charlotte County Hospital on June 18th, 2025.
She was born in 1937, to the late Burton and Myrtle (Stewart) Weeks.
She enjoyed many aspects of her life, but she was at her best when she was enjoying all that nature had to offer. She was raised to appreciate all things that our landscape could provide and therefore she was a wealth of knowledge when it came to foraging and living off the land. From hunting and fishing, to gardening she didn’t have to go far to provide the best home cooked meals for her family and friends. There was always room at her table for anyone, and you never left her table without being totally satisfied.
She loved spending as much time as possible at her camp in Flume Ridge and especially enjoyed the company that would stop in while floating down the river. She was known to catch more fish than anyone else and rarely used a real fishing pole. She’d find a stick on the way to her favorite fishing spots and tie a line and a hook to it, and maybe a little WD-40 sprayed on the bait for good measure. Speaking of measuring, her family is left to decipher her famous recipes as they include a dollop of this, a pinch of that and ‘shortening the size of an egg’. She was an amazing cook, but she never used a measuring spoon.
She was a pillar of strength for her family and as her body succumbed to decades of hard labour, it was easy to see where her ailments originated. From lugging buckets of water in from a stream to the "Wood-Be’s" where her family would gather to help her process firewood every year, to skeet shooting weekends in Maine, and all the hunting excursions with her kids and grandkids. Not to forget the countless batches of homemade bread she kneaded by hand. She made the most of her physical abilities and passed on her strength to those around her.
She is survived by her children Deborah Bagwell (Allan Howle) of Wellford, SC, Darlene MacDonald (Gordon) of St Stephen, NB, Deanna Purdy (Steven Thompson) of Fort McMurray, AB, Thomas Cook Jr. of Calais, ME, and Daniel Cook (Cindy) of Cocoa, FL. She was known as Nana by her grandchildren David Beaudry (Brittany) of Cadiz, KY, Craig MacDonald (Jennifer), Emmy Caldwell (Jesse), Christopher Purdy (Christina) all of St. Stephen, NB, Lauren Waycott (Melvin) of Princeton, ME, and Macy Grace Cook of Cocoa, FL. Later in her life she earned the title of Bammie and Great Grammie and she is survived by many great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her sisters Donna Libby of St. Stephen, NB, and Louise Cleghorn (Kenneth) of Windsor, ON as well as many nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her parents, as well as her husband Thomas Cook Sr, followed by her partner Kenneth Ryan, brothers Douglas Weeks and Kenneth Weeks, sisters Jean Johnston and Doris Stewart, and beloved grandson Matthew Purdy.
As per her request there will be no visitation or funeral service. A private family interment will take place. Donations in her memory can be made to the Charlotte County SPCA or a charity of one’s choice. condolences may be sent to the family online at mehanfuneralhome.ca
