Bernice L. Dougherty

Bernice L. Dougherty passed away at Lincourt Manor, St. Stephen, NB on Wednesday, April 15, 2020.

Born in St. Stephen, NB., daughter of the late Albert and Laura May Gaddas.

Mom was a hard worker with dad, building their very successful businesses while raising their four children and they were well known in St. Stephen for their grocery store which they opened shortly after marrying in 1951.  After a few moves to Nova Scotia, Bath, Maine and Calais, Maine, Mom and Dad operated "John’s Meat Market", a clothing store and restaurants in Calais and Milltown, Maine until their retirement.  Throughout the busy years, Mom did find time to go to local bingo games, she was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion Ladies Auxiliary Branch 9, and she and dad enjoyed Wednesday night horseracing in Saint John. 

In mom’s retirement years, she missed working with the public so much that she became a Walmart Greeter in Calais.  She was well known locally to many as the "lady with the hats" and for her love and concern for many cats in the community who needed help.  Mom always said that if she won the lottery, she would have a big farm for all the needy cats.

Survived by three daughters, Pam Rogers (Vern), Levant, Maine, Patty Stewart (Brett), Pleasant Ridge, Debbie Hill (Russ), Calais, Maine,  eight grandchildren ,several great-grandchildren, great-great grandchildren,  one sister, Ruby Andrews of Calais, Maine, nieces, nephews and cousins.

In addition to her parents, Bernice was predeceased by her husband, John C. Dougherty, son John Michael Dougherty, brother Frank Gaddas Sr., sister, Violet Carter and grandson, Jeff Dougherty.

There will be no funeral service and visitation held at this time. Funeral service information will be published at a later date
