Alberta Catherine Spires

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Alberta (Jarvis) Spires. After a two month illness she passed away peacefully surrounded by her family New Years Day 2012.

Alberta will be dearly missed by her children Bryan (Belinda), Daryl (Chris), Joanne (Bill Johnson) and Stephen (Tammy) as well as grandchildren Barbara (Mike England), Bridgette Spires, Alisha (Jeff Robbins), Leslie Johnson, Jarvis Spires, Brook Day and great granddaughter Sydney England. Sisters Anna Hansen (Dale),Phyllis Richter (Norm), Barbara Delong (Ron) and Donna Bresnahan (Emmet). Several nieces and nephews. Predeceased by her husband Vincent Spires, parents Victor and Elizabeth Jarvis, brother Olin (Viola) Jarvis, sisters Ruth Philips and Winnie (Ron) Ferguson.

Born in Canterbury, the oldest of 8 children, Alberta graduated at the age of 15 and immediately started teaching school under a war licence. After a few postings she arrived in Elmsville where she met the love of her life Vincent. They married in 1949, however ,Vincent was killed in a car accident in 1962 leaving Alberta to raise 4 young children on her own. She then returned to teaching under her war licence in St. George where she taught until retirement. She also waited tables at Hatt's Restaurant in St. Andrews during the summer to pay the previous winter's oil bills. Besides her total and un-conditional love and pride of her family, Alberta was also proud to belong to Christ Church , the Elmsville WI and ACW, St. George Legion and twice Past Matron of OES Granite Chapter (she even cooked for a supper or two for worthy causes) 'Bert' loved to dance and was a life member of the Town & Country Square Dance Club and By The Sea Round Dance Club. She particularly enjoyed her apartment and old and new friends she made a St. Croix Retirement Community.

Mehan and Son Funeral home Ltd. 23 Main Street, St. Stephen, NB (506) 466-1844 from where family will receive friends on Tuesday January 3, 2012 2-4 PM and 7-9PM Funeral Service will be held Wednesday January 4, 2012 from the Christ Church, Elmsville, NB. at 2 PM with Rev. Canon John Matheson officiating.

Interment at Christ Church Cemetery, Elmsville, NB.
