J. Maybelle Pomeroy

J. Maybelle (Spires) Pomeroy passed away peacefully, Sunday, January 26th, 2025, at Lincourt Manor with her family by her side.

Maybelle, born in St. Stephen, NB to the late Maurice and Jean (Brown) Spires.

She was the younger sister to Melvin Spires. Her dad, Maurice was killed in a highway accident when Maybelle was 4 years and was raised by her Mom and stepfather Avard Stewart.

After graduation Maybelle worked briefly at NB Power in Fredericton until meeting the love of her life, Gary, marrying in 1960. They began their married life in Little Ridge, NB and had their first four children: John, Susan, Stephen and Barbara. They then then moved to Chatham, NB where their youngest child, Neil was born.

While living in Chatham they were members of the United Church, Square Dancing, Rebekah and Odd Fellows Lodge until they moved to McAdam in 1980. When they moved to Grand Bay, NB in 1981, they were members of St. Giles United Church, Belles and Bows Square Dancers and Rebekah Lodge.

Maybelle started her bowling career in Grand Bay. She had become a member of two leagues and enjoyed this tremendously.

While living in Grand Bay, their children began marrying and give them precious grandchildren and this is where the babysitting parties began.

Many of the grandchildren would be found at their home eating Nanny’s homemade chicken soup and molasses cookies (which were a favorite) making lifelong memories. As noted by granddaughter, Jill, baking Nanny’s molasses cookies and being served with love at the funeral service on Friday.

She was also a great knitter and most of the grandchildren wore her
homemade mittens. She would additionally make numerous pair for the Men’s Club Auction every year, where she enjoyed bidding and winning a variety of treasures.

Maybelle was known as "the Pie Lady" for all Boy Scout trips Gary went on and the various canoe trips until the day she ended up in the river, then that was the end of her canoeing. However, she would still supply pies, especially for their numerous trips to Doug and Florence’s camp.

After Gary retired in 1999, they returned to Little Ridge, moving into the family home, always lovingly referred to as "The Farm". It was here where she began
hosting many a family gathering with her baked goods and hearty meals.

Maybelle continued her bowling career and enjoyed the Tuesday Women’s League and their weekly dining out at Pizza Delight. She was also a member of the Upper Little Ridge UCW. They also continued their Friday night Square Dancing at Kirk McColl United Church and many dances throughout NB and NS.

Gary became the "Noble Grand’ of Odd Fellow Lodge for NB and NS. They
travelled extensively through this time visiting all the chapters under him.
Maybelle was an avid shopper for souvenirs and always came home with one or more bags of collectables.

Maybelle developed Parkinson’s Disease and when Gary was no longer capable of taking care for her, she moved to Lincourt Manor in 2016. She had lived here until her passing. It was at Lincourt Manor that she developed a love for Word Search Puzzle books. She would complete usually 1 a week until she was no longer able
to see to complete them, which was a great sorrow to her.

Maybelle is survived by her loving husband of 64 years, Gary, her children; John (Peggy), Stephen (Patty), Neil (Stacey), Susan Dow and Barbara James, 14 grandchildren, several great-great grandchildren and brother; Melvin (Merla) Spires.

Funeral service will be held at The S.O. Mehan & Son Funeral Home Ltd., 23 Main Street, St. Stephen, N.B. on Friday January 31, 2025 at 2:30 PM. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Friday from 12:00 – 2 PM.

Interment in Pomeroy Ridge Cemetery, Pomeroy Ridge, N.B. at a later date.
