Lt. Col. (Ret.), the Rev.Canon F. Paul DeLong

Surrounded by his family, Frederick Paul DeLong, 77, passed away peacefully on Friday February 4th, 2005 at the Charlotte County Hospital. Paul, son of Leonard and Pearl DeLong, was born in Saint John, New Brunswick, where he attended Saint John High School. He graduated from Kings College in Halifax in 1948 with his Bachelor of Theology. Paul was ordained in May of 1949 and married Betty C. Garrison of Halifax, Nova Scotia in August of that same year. The first parish of his 56 year Ministry was in Oak Bay, New Brunswick followed by two years in Jemseg, NB. Canon DeLong enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force as a Chaplain with the rank of Flight Lieutenant and began a 27 year career, retiring with the rank of Lt. Col. In 1982. He saw world-wide duty serving as Base Padre initially and eventually as Command Chaplain of Maritime Command. He was appointed a Canon of the Military Cathedral in Ottawa, Ontario in 1970. Canon DeLong returned to civilian ministry in 1982 serving St. Stephen Anglican Parish. Paul and Betty enjoyed their return to parochial life in the province they loved so dearly. Canon DeLong retired from active ministry in 1988 and remained in the Parish in a part-time capacity as Honorary Assistant. After being predeceased by his wife, Betty in 1992, Paul remained an active member of Christ Church. In February, 1995, Paul married Ruth E. Williams of Montreal, Quebec. They took up residence in St. Stephen area sharing a ten year marriage. Canon DeLong is known by his family and friends for his kind, serene spirit and for his wise and compassionate ways with all he knew. His puns, his love of the water, his carpentry skills and his love of animals has been passed on to the family he left behind.Canon DeLong was predeceased by: Father, Leonard, Mother, Pearl; brothers, Kenneth and Hazen, and wife, Betty. He is survived by wife, Ruth; children, Marie Biggar and family of Ontario; Monty DeLong and family of Sackville, NB; Chris DeLong and family of Manitoba; Anna DeLong and family of Virginia; Joyce Orchard and family of St. Stephen; stepchildren, Shirley Woodger and family of PEI; Gordon Williams and family of Ontario; Norman Williams and family of Alberta; fourteen grandchildren; a brother Russell DeLong, and sister Dorothy Gates and many nieces and nephews. He will be sadly missed by all whose life he touched.In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Christ Church Memorial Fund. A memorial service was held at Christ Church in St. Stephen on February 7th, 2005. Interment will take place in the spring at Elmsville Historical Cemetery. The S.O.
